Cab Calloway war ein US-amerikanischer Jazz-Sänger, Saxophonist und Bandleader, der am 25. Dezember 1907 geboren wurde und am 18. November 1994 verstarb. Calloway wuchs in Baltimore auf und begann seine musikalische Laufbahn in den 1920er Jahren, inspiriert von seiner Schwester Blanche Calloway, als Sänger in verschiedenen Jazzbands. Obwohl diese Bands keinen großen Erfolg hatten, fiel Calloway durch seinen Gesang und seine lebhaften Tanzeinlagen auf. Im Jahr 1930 nahm er seine erste Schallplatte auf und ab 1931 trat er im berühmten New Yorker Cotton Club auf. Dort entwickelte er sich neben Louis Armstrong und Duke Ellington zu einem der populärsten schwarzen Entertainer der 1930er Jahre. Calloway wirkte auch in Filmen mit, darunter "Manhattan Merry-Go-Round" (1937). Mitte 1931 hatte er mit "Six or Seven Times", "(I’ll be Glad When You’re Dead) You Rascal, You", "Kickin’ the Gong Around" und "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" seine ersten Chart-Erfolge. In den 1930er Jahren war er an Betty-Boop-Cartoons der Fleischer Studios beteiligt, insbesondere in "Minnie the Moocher", wo seine Tanzbewegungen auf ein Walross übertragen wurden. Calloway gründete bald seine eigene Big Band und landete 1942 seinen größten Hit mit "Blues in the Night (My Mama Done Tol’ Me)". Seine Big Band war mit einigen der größten Stars der Swing-Ära besetzt. 1945 erreichte er mit "Let’s Take the Long Way Home" noch einmal eine Chartplatzierung. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ließ das Interesse an Swingorchestern nach, und Calloway musste seine Band 1948 auflösen. Er trat danach mit anderen Bands auf. Ein Artikel im Ebony Magazin im Jahr 1951, der unter Calloways Namen veröffentlicht wurde und in dem behauptet wurde, Drogen seien ein Hauptantrieb der Musikindustrie, kostete ihn die Sympathie einiger Musiker. George Gershwin schuf 1935 die Figur des Sportin’ Life in seiner Oper "Porgy and Bess" nach dem Vorbild von Cab Calloway. Erst in den 1950er Jahren spielte Calloway diese Rolle selbst auf der Bühne. Einem breiteren Publikum wurde Cab Calloway durch seinen Auftritt im Film "Blues Brothers" (1980) bekannt. "Minnie the Moocher" wurde zu seinem Erkennungslied und blieb sein bekanntestes Stück. Nach einem Schlaganfall am 12. Juni 1994 in seinem Haus in Westchester County, New York, starb er am 18. November. Im Februar 2008 erhielt Cab Calloway posthum einen Grammy für sein Lebenswerk.
