Cecil B. DeMille war ein US-amerikanischer Regisseur, Produzent und Schauspieler, der am 12. August 1881 geboren wurde und am 21. Januar 1959 verstarb. DeMille war der Sohn eines Bühnenautors. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters wurde er in einer Kadettenanstalt untergebracht, von der er aber weglief, um sich während des Amerikanisch-Spanischen Krieges als Soldat zu melden. Später folgte er seinem Bruder William und begann eine Karriere als Schauspieler. Um 1900 freundete er sich mit bekannten Persönlichkeiten des Showgeschäfts an.
Im Jahr 1902 heiratete DeMille Constance und sie bekamen eine leibliche Tochter und adoptierten drei weitere Kinder. 1913 gründete er mit Jesse L. Lasky und Samuel Goldwyn eine Filmfirma, die Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company. DeMille ging nach Hollywood und drehte dort 1914 mit Oscar Apfel den Film "The Squaw Man". Der finanzielle Erfolg dieses Films ermöglichte es ihm, weitere Projekte zu realisieren. Aus der Lasky Company wurde später Paramount, wo DeMille eine zentrale Rolle als kreativer Kopf übernahm. DeMille erkannte den Wert von Stars für den Erfolg von Filmen und förderte Talente wie Geraldine Farrar und Wallace Reid.
In den 1920er-Jahren drehte DeMille seine ersten Bibel-Filmepen, darunter "Die Zehn Gebote" (1923) und "König der Könige" (1927). Er war auch eines der Gründungsmitglieder der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Nach einigen Jahren bei MGM kehrte DeMille 1932 zu Paramount zurück. In den Folgejahren wurde er einer der einflussreichsten Regisseure und Produzenten des Studios. Ab 1936 war DeMille für die Radioshow Lux Radio Show verantwortlich. 1950 erhielt er den Ehrenoscar für sein Lebenswerk. Seinen größten Erfolg feierte er mit den Filmen "Die größte Schau der Welt" und dem Remake von "Die zehn Gebote". Cecil B. DeMille starb 1959 während der Vorbereitungen für seinen ersten Science-Fiction-Film.

Cecil de Mille has had experience as an actor, having played with E. H. Sothern and other stars. He tried playwriting by constructing a melodrama which met with success, after which he collaborated with his brother on the play for Mr. Richman. He has just completed a play for a star in collaboration with Mrs. Charles Doremus.
