Edmund Hillary war ein Bergsteiger, der am 20. Juli 1919 in Auckland geboren wurde und am 11. Januar 2008 ebenda verstarb. Er wuchs in Neuseeland auf und besuchte die Auckland Grammar School. Schon als Kind entdeckte er seine Leidenschaft für die Berge in den Neuseeländischen Alpen und unternahm 1933 seine erste Bergbesteigung auf den Vulkan Ruapehu. Nach zwei Jahren an der Universität von Auckland wurde Hillary Imker, wie sein Vater. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs diente er von 1944 bis 1945 als Navigator bei der Royal New Zealand Air Force. 1948 gelang ihm mit Harry Ayres die Erstbesteigung des Aoraki/Mount Cook über den Südgrat. In den frühen 1950er Jahren nahm Hillary an Expeditionen in den Himalaya teil. 1953 erreichte er dann zusammen mit Tenzing Norgay als Teil einer britischen Expedition unter der Leitung von John Hunt den Gipfel des Mount Everest. Auf dem letzten Stück zum Gipfel überwand er eine gefährliche Steilstufe, die später als Hillary Step bekannt wurde. Die Nachricht von der erfolgreichen Besteigung erreichte London kurz vor der Krönung von Elisabeth II. Hillary wurde daraufhin zum Ritter geschlagen. In den folgenden Jahren unternahm Edmund Hillary weitere Expeditionen im Himalaya und erreichte 1958 im Rahmen der Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition den Südpol. Er engagierte sich auch stark für die Sherpas in Nepal und gründete den Himalayan Trust, um Schulen und Krankenhäuser in der Khumbu-Region zu bauen. Von 1984 bis 1989 war Hillary Botschafter Neuseelands in Indien, Bangladesch und Nepal. Er starb 2008 in Auckland an einem Herzanfall.

A-Frame hut on the Ross Ice Shelf near Scott Base (Antarctica), which burnt down in 2009. Originally part of the United States base, it had been used by New Zealanders since 1971. The hut was a favourite haunt of Sir Edmund Hillary.
