John Herschel Glenn Jr., geboren am 18. Juli 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio, USA, und verstorben am 8. Dezember 2016 in Columbus, Ohio, USA war ein US-amerikanischer Kampfpilot, Testpilot, Astronaut und Politiker. Er war 1962 der erste Amerikaner, der die Erde in einem Raumschiff umkreiste, und von 1974 bis 1999 für den Staat Ohio Senator der Demokratischen Partei im Senat der Vereinigten Staaten.
Ich empfand die Schwerelosigkeit als äußerst angenehm Die Tatsache, dass man dieses seltsame Phänomen da oben als so natürlich empfindet, bezeugt, wie schnell der Mensch sich einer neuen Umgebung anpassen kann. Dieser Zustand ist sogar so angenehm, dass wir schließlich scherzhaft meinten, der Mensch könne leicht süchtig danach werden. Ich zumindest könnte es.

A U.S. Air Force North American F-86F-30-NA Sabre (s/n 52-4584) in 1953. This plane was flown by U.S. Marine Corps Major John H. Glenn and dubbed MiG Mad Marine. Glenn flew this aircraft during his time as an exchange pilot with the 25th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Wing, in Korea in mid 1953. He shot down three MiG-15 aircraft. John Glenn later became an astronaut and U.S. senator.

Astronauts in Project Mercury, the first U.S. human spaceflight program, experienced very strong g forces during acceleration into space and deceleration during reentry--up to 11 times Earths gravity. To better withstand these forces, each astronaut had special form-fitted couches made for their bodies. John H. Glenn, Jr., the first American to orbit the Earth, used this couch for g training in the centrifuge at the Naval Air Development Center in Johnsville, Pennsylvania, between 1959 and 1962. To create this couch, a NASA contractor made a plaster cast of the astronauts body in a sitting position, then used the form to make the couch out of fiberglass.
