Seamus Heaney war ein irischer Schriftsteller, der am 13. April 1939 in Tamniaran bei Castledawson geboren wurde und am 30. August 2013 in Dublin verstarb. Er war nicht nur Lyriker, sondern auch Literaturwissenschaftler und Übersetzer. Heaney stammte aus einer katholischen Bauernfamilie und besuchte dank eines Stipendiums das St. Columb’s College, wo er Latein und Irisch lernte. Später studierte er Anglistik an der Queen’s University in Belfast und vertiefte seine Kenntnisse in angelsächsischer Sprache und Literatur. Nach seinem Examen arbeitete er als Lehrer und Dozent, bevor er Gastdozent an der University of California, Berkeley wurde. 1972 zog Heaney mit seiner Familie in die Republik Irland und später nach Dublin, wo er am Carysfort College lehrte. Ab 1985 hatte er eine Professur in Rhetorik an der Harvard University inne und war parallel dazu Professor of Poetry in Oxford. Heaney sah sich selbst als Ire und lehnte es ab, als britischer Dichter betrachtet zu werden. Er engagierte sich politisch und unterstützte den Vertrag von Lissabon. Verheiratet war er mit Marie Devlin, einer Lehrerin und Schriftstellerin, die sein Werk maßgeblich beeinflusste. Sie hatten zwei Söhne und eine Tochter. Nach einem Schlaganfall im Jahr 2006 erholte er sich zunächst, verstarb dann aber 2013 nach einem Sturz. Er wurde in seinem Geburtsort Bellaghy beigesetzt. Schon während seines Studiums begann Heaney Gedichte zu schreiben und veröffentlichte seine ersten Sammlungen in den 1960er Jahren. Sein Werk befasst sich oft mit seiner Heimat, der irischen Geschichte und Mythologie. Heaney war der Meinung, dass irische Traditionen durch den Verlust der irischen Sprache ihre Ausdrucksform verloren hätten und nun im Englischen wiedergefunden werden müssten. Er strebte danach, eine ursprüngliche irische Tradition wiederzubeleben. Heaneys Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nordirlandkonflikt spiegelt sich in seinen Gedichtbänden "Wintering Out" und "North" wider. 1995 erhielt Heaney den Nobelpreis für Literatur.

The 3rd annual Dalkey Book Festival was bigger and better than ever and kicked off on Friday the 15th June. For three days, books of every kind was celebrated and brought to life by their authors. This year, the line up included local writers and those who have a particular affection for Dalkey such as Maeve Binchy, Joseph O'Connor, Carlo Gebler, Dermot Healy, Martina Devlin and John Waters. Festival directors, David McWilliams and Sian Smyth worked with the support of a superb team of volunteers and the Dalkey Business Group to ensure the festival's success. Poets' Chair The inscription on the front of the chair is a poem by Seamus Heaney which includes the line, "When you sat ... in the basalt throne", an entirely appropriate verse for Rathlin, which is mostly covered in basalt, though it originally refers to the Giant's Causeway. What a pity that the chair is made of granite, which does not occur on Rathlin! On the back of the chair is a list of artists and poets who have visited Rathlin, with room for many more.
