Als serbischer Präsident unterstützte er nationalistische Bestrebungen, die zu den Jugoslawienkriegen führten, einschließlich ethnischer Säuberungen und Massakern.
Miloševićs Politik der Serbifizierung und seine Unterstützung für serbische Nationalisten trugen zur Eskalation des Konflikts in Kroatien und Bosnien bei. 2001 wurde er an den Internationalen Strafgerichtshof (IStGH) überstellt und wegen Kriegsverbrechen und Völkermord angeklagt.
